Total cost of Balkhash NPP construction in Kazakhstan named
Around $16.4 billion will be spent on the project
The construction of the first nuclear power plant in Almaty region will cost approximately $16.4 billion. This was announced by the press service of the Atomic Energy Agency of Kazakhstan.
The main part of the funding (about $14.4 billion) will be allocated to the construction of two power units of the Balkhash NPP. The remaining $2 billion will be used for the safety system, fuel, and infrastructure.
In May, Russia and Kazakhstan signed an agreement on providing Astana with a state export credit for the construction of a nuclear facility in the village of Ulken. Engineering and survey work has now begun on the allocated site.
Russian President Vladimir Putin previously stated that financing such projects is an international practice. Suppliers, in particular Rosatom, will participate in the future in the maintenance of the NPP, fuel and equipment supplies. This is a beneficial deal for both countries.
