Citizens of Kazakhstan can use antivirus software to protect their smartphone from malware distributed by fraudsters. In this way, they will safeguard their confidential data, the press service of the republic's Ministry of Internal Affairs reported.

Cases are being recorded of the spread of malicious software installed on mobile devices running the Android operating system.

How software from attackers gets onto smartphones:

  • following a phishing link sent in a messenger
  • downloading a malicious file disguised as photos or documents
  • messages purportedly from government authorities, banks, and goods delivery services
  • calls made in the name of lottery organizers

If the user installs an infected file, fraudsters gain remote access to the device. In this way, criminals can take out a loan in the victim's name or block the phone and demand a ransom.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs reminded citizens that they should not disclose SMS codes to anyone, install applications from unverified sources, or follow links from an unknown sender. If a smartphone quickly loses charge, overheats, or unfamiliar applications appear on it, one should contact law enforcement, the ministry concluded.
