A resident of Kazakhstan installed an app and lost 5 million tenge
The Ministry of Internal Affairs warned about a new type of fraud
A resident of Uralsk became a victim of fraudsters who forced her to download an application that provided remote access to her phone. As a result, the woman lost a large sum of money. This was reported by the press service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Kazakhstan.
Unknown individuals contacted the victim by phone and asked her to dictate an SMS code. After that, the woman received a second call. The criminals introduced themselves as bank employees and said that criminals could take possession of her savings.
They assured her that unknown persons had begun taking out a loan in her name. To supposedly cancel the operation, she needed to download a special application.
An installation file was sent to the woman via the WhatsApp messenger. After it was unpacked on the smartphone, the fraudsters gained access to the device. As a result, they stole 5 million tenge.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Kazakhstan reminded citizens that they should not download applications and programs from unverified sources. State authorities do not send citizens any files to "protect" their funds. A check is being conducted into the fraud case, the agency concluded.
