In the first half of 2026, Russia increased its electricity supplies to Kazakhstan. This is confirmed by data from the report of Inter RAO (an energy holding company that exports electricity from the Russian Federation). However, the republic plans to reduce purchases starting from 2027.

According to the operator's information, from January to June 2026, Kazakhstan received 1.68 billion kWh of electricity from the Russian Federation, which is 20.3% more than in the same period of 2025. Kazakhstan accounted for 53% of Russian electricity exports.

Russia also imported electricity from Kazakhstan. This indicator decreased by 4.7%, to 1.13 billion kWh. The republic provided about 94% of all Russian imports in the first half of 2026.

In the spring of this year, Kazakhstan refused Russian equipment for the third power unit of GRES-2 (Ekibastuz, Pavlodar region). The republic switched to solutions from suppliers from China.
