Scientists at Auezov South Kazakhstan University have opened the autonomous environmental laboratory for the urban environment, EcoLab. It will focus on air purification and disinfection, the press service of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of Kazakhstan reported.
The researchers are working within the scientific project "Development of an Innovative Technology of Eco-Engineering Modules for Local Rehabilitation of the Urban Environment." Its head is Aisulu Abduova, chair of the Department of Ecology.
According to her, the laboratory was built from environmentally friendly materials. The building was equipped with a hydroponic system, phytofilters for air purification, solar panels, and a weather station. At EcoLab, analyses will be conducted for the content of heavy metals in soil and water, as well as studies on environmental disinfection.
In addition, on the basis of the laboratory, researchers plan to study plant propagation using efficient water consumption technologies. The project is aimed at improving air quality in the city.
As a result of the implementation, a reduction in the concentration of PM2.5 particles in the air at the local level by approximately 20–30% is expected. An improvement in the urban microclimate is also expected, under which the air temperature may decrease by 1–2°C.
The initiative will help increase the city's green area and create more clean public spaces.
