Kazakhstan to Strengthen Oversight of Personal Data Protection

A seminar for representatives of local executive authorities was held in Astana

Employees of the Information Security Committee held a seminar in Astana on personal data protection issues for representatives of local executive authorities. This was reported by the press service of the Ministry of Digital Development, Innovations and Aerospace Industry of Kazakhstan. 

During the seminar, issues related to state oversight of business entities on personal data protection and the procedure for conducting inspections were explained. Representatives of 20 regions and cities of republican significance took part in the event.

Following the training, part of the functions for conducting inspections in the field of personal data protection has been transferred to the regional level. This will make it possible to respond more quickly to violations and strengthen local oversight.

On the powers of representatives of local executive authorities

Digitalization units in the regions have the right to conduct inspections, as well as take administrative measures against violators. This concerns holding them liable and imposing fines in accordance with the current legislation of Kazakhstan.

Depending on the nature of the offense, fines range from 100 to 2,000 MCI, the ministry explained.

What data citizens of Kazakhstan may refuse to provide to third-party organizations

In private organizations, including beauty salons, gyms, and supermarkets, a citizen may provide data that is directly related to receiving a service. This does not include a residential address, IIN, and other information. The user has the right to refuse to provide it.

If personal data has already been provided, consent can be withdrawn on the eGov portal or through the eGov mobile app, the ministry concluded.
