Cable barrier on the Astana-Almaty highway prevented a car from entering the oncoming lane

The road barrier has been under testing for the second year

An accident occurred on the Astana–Almaty KAZ01 highway section, where the trial operation of cable road barriers has been continuing for the second year. Thanks to the new barrier, it was possible to minimize the consequences of the accident. This was reported by the press service of the Kazakhstan Ministry of Transport.

A car traveling at 110 km/h crashed into the cable barrier. As a result of the incident, the cable absorbed the impact load and prevented the vehicle from entering the oncoming lane.

The experimental section with the new barrier, about 500 m long, is located near Temirtau. The cable is installed on the central median strip and along the roadside.

Barrier objectives:

  • preventing vehicles from entering the oncoming lane
  • reducing the risk of head-on collisions
  • ensuring safety during the winter period
Unlike traditional metal barrier structures, cable barriers do not retain snow and do not contribute to the formation of snow drifts.

Given the positive results of the experiment, the ministry will consider the possibility of installing similar barriers on other roads. Technical support for the project is being provided by "KazdorNII"
