The government of Kazakhstan faces a strategic task: to achieve a sustainable energy surplus by 2029. This will be possible, among other things, thanks to the construction of nuclear power plants, President of the Republic Kassym-Jomart Tokayev stated in his address to the nation.
Tokayev recalled that in the October 2024 referendum, the people of Kazakhstan made the right decision regarding the construction of an NPP.
Already now, we need to think about how we will provide them with uranium raw materials, say, in fifty years and beyond.
He proposed creating a state strategic uranium reserve. Such a pool of raw materials will cover the needs of nuclear facilities for the next 100 years, the head of state added.
I consider it possible to start construction of the “Balkhash” NPP as early as next year and sign an agreement on comprehensive cooperation to expedite the start of construction of the “Moyynkum” NPP.
Tokayev called for involving foreign partners participating in the construction of the NPP in establishing high-tech industries in Kazakhstan. In addition, it is necessary to ensure the transfer of competencies in nuclear energy and the training of Kazakh nuclear specialists.
Relevant proposals are coming from Russia and China, the president emphasized. The authorities of Kazakhstan will thoroughly analyze them and act with national interests in mind, Tokayev concluded.
