Digital labeling of wood is planned to be introduced in Kazakhstan

The pilot project ran from August 2025 to January 2026

Authorities in Kazakhstan have summarized the results of the pilot project on digital labeling of wood. It took place from August 2025 to January 2026 to test the mechanism for identifying and accounting for raw materials, the press service of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of Kazakhstan reported.

The labeling process was tested in "Semey Ormany" with the participation of entrepreneurs from the Abay region. Plastic seals with a unique barcode were applied to the logs.

The seals were installed directly on the wood using a hand tool – a hammer-sealer. The design of the seal excludes the possibility of reuse or forgery: it is destroyed when trying to remove it.

The barcode from the seal is entered into the Unified Information System for Marking and Traceability of Goods. It stores data on the type of forest, the number of the logging permit, the volume of harvesting and the responsible person. Thanks to this, it is possible to trace the movement of the log from the logging site to the warehouse and the sale itself.

The ministry emphasized that the results of the experiment confirmed the technical feasibility of introducing wood labeling. This way it is possible to increase control by the authorities of Kazakhstan, as well as reduce the risk of illegal trafficking in timber.
