Fante 400 dual-shaft shredder launched at the lithium-ion battery recycling workshop at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University

Scientists to test technologies for extracting valuable metals

A workshop for recycling spent lithium-ion batteries has been opened at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University (KazNU). Here, they will develop technology for extracting valuable metals from batteries, the press service of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of Kazakhstan reported.

Alina Galeeva, Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs, took part in the opening ceremony. According to her, such projects strengthen the connection between science and production. The initiative will help solve a number of environmental problems, including more effective waste management.

The workshop installed a Fante 400 dual-shaft shredder for crushing batteries, a DZSF-515 vibrating screen for sorting materials, and an NG-706 unit for separating components. The head of the workshop, Fyodor Malchik, explained that in the first stage, lithium-ion batteries are discharged, then crushed and sorted by composition. The result is a “black mass” from which valuable materials are planned to be extracted.

The project aligns with the goals of the “Taza Kazakhstan” environmental initiative. The workshop was opened through program-targeted financing, the ministry concluded.
