Injectable Biocomposite Hydrogel for Joint Tissue Regeneration Developed in Kazakhstan

New technologies for restoring damaged cartilage and bone tissues were presented at the XIII International Conference “Interdisciplinary Traumatology and Orthopedics: From Diagnosis to Rehabilitation.” The event took place at the Batpenov National Scientific Center for Traumatology and Orthopedics in Astana. This was reported by the press service of the Ministry of Health of Kazakhstan.

Traumatologist-orthopedist Meruert Makhmetova from the Batpenov National Scientific Center for Traumatology and Orthopedics created an injectable biocomposite hydrogel. It is injected into the damaged area to regenerate tissues. The gel contains the patient's own mesenchymal stem cells and growth factors.

The development has great prospects for the surgical treatment of osteochondral defects of the talus bone of the ankle joint. Meruert Makhmetova's work won first place among young scientists in the “Batpenov Readings” competition.

In 2026, the conference gathered more than 850 participants from Kazakhstan and foreign countries. The event program included over 190 reports and 5 demonstration surgeries.

Thematic sessions discussed new directions in medicine: robot-assisted knee arthroplasty, complex revision arthroplasty, pediatric orthopedics, vertebrology, and rehabilitation. Representatives of the Ministry of Health of Kazakhstan honored medical professionals for their selfless work and dedication to their profession.
