Scientists at Utebaev University Develop Eco-Friendly Packaging from Propylene and Waste

International Research Laboratory Opens at the University

The international research laboratory at Utebayev University has begun implementing a new project aimed at protecting the environment. Scientists are developing environmentally friendly packaging from polypropylene and agricultural waste, according to the press service of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of Kazakhstan.

Funding was received in the form of a grant from the relevant ministry for 2025-2027. The project aims to create biodegradable polymer composites, which will help reduce the harmful impact of plastic on the environment.

In the course of research, scientists are focusing on the effective use of local resources – reeds and agricultural waste.

Recycled raw materials are introduced into the structure of propylene, which reduces production costs. The research is being conducted with the support of Turkish scientist Yasin Kanbur from Karabuk University (Turkey).

Specialists at Utebayev University are working with modern equipment. They are testing the properties of the resulting material using scanning electron microscopy, thermal analysis, and UV resistance testing. The resulting eco-packaging will be used in various fields, including the food industry, construction, medicine, and cargo transportation.
